Scuba Diving in North Cyprus
North Cyprus is a wonderful place to learn to snorkel or scuba dive as it offers safe warm waters all year round. North Cyprus is an island of breathtaking scenery, with beautiful sandy beaches set against a landscape of rugged cliffs, dense pine forests, field after field of vines, citrus and banana trees, and 127 endemic flower varieties found nowhere else in the world. Throughout Cyprus you will find scenic, cultural, historical and, of course, fantastic dive locations.
You can dive from April right through to Christmas, one of the longest dive seasons in the world. Many marine reefs giving shelter to a wide variety of see life. Clear visibility (30 metres plus), warm waters, the chance to see turtles, octopus, grouper, numerous other fish, along with fascinating coral and plant life. The ancient history of North Cyprus also ensures there is plenty to see once you are under the water. The rugged coastline has claimed many ships over the centuries, and you can even dive at the site where the world’s oldest trading ship was found (the actual ship is in the Shipwreak Museum in Kyrenia castle).

Kyrenia is the main centre for diving, and most of the schools are based here. There are over twenty dive sites within easy reach of Kyrenia harbour alone. Possible to find offers for a wide variety of dives, lessons and packages including scuba diving for children using only fully qualified PADI instructors. You can relax and enjoy their experience above and below the surface with the latest equipment.
You can choose from about twenty diving sites east and west of Kyrenia as well as diving safaris to other places along the coast. These are sites that will give the experienced diver thrills and the warm, crystal-clear water and limited depth provide perfect learning conditions for the beginner.
You can experience wreck diving including the site where in the 1960's one of the world's oldest shipwreck was found - 2300 years old, dating from the time of Alexander the Great. The excavated hull of the ship, together with its cargo of amphorae and millstones is hosed in a special museum in Kyrenia Castle.
You will be accompanied by professional divers who will do everything to give you an unforgettable diving holiday. We also want to inform you that Scuba Diving along the coasts of North Cyprus is not allowed on your own. And it is illegal to move or touch any historical artifacts.
Ancient wreak sites are mixed with stunning natural features, such as wonderful underwater formations at Mansinis Reef and great opportunities for underwater wildlife photography at Fred’s Reef. A popular Northern Cyprus dive is Paradise, featuring caves, cuts and canyons at a minimum depth of just 27 metres, whilst the underwater mountain peak of Zeyko never fails to impress.
Try scuba diving in North Cyprus!
North Cyprus is the place to learn diving. The dive sites, which mentioned above are probably the best in the Mediterranean: the sea is warm, the water is crystal clear and there is visibility for over 30 meters. What really makes North Cyprus different is the abundance of underwater life.
Always look for a PADI approved diving school, and you’ll be assured of the highest standards of training and equipment. The excellent PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program gives you a basic introduction to scuba diving, with full safety instructions, plus a gentle dive accompanied by your instructors. Some schools will teach you the basics in sheltered sea coves (no boring swimming pools) so you can get the thrill of being under the sea right from the start. You can also take further courses, including the full four day dive course, or upgrade to your Open Water accreditation, in North Cyprus’ pleasant and clear waters. Most North Cyprus dive centres also off the PADI Bubblemaker course for children aged over eight, and regular courses for those over ten years of age.
North Cyprus Scuba Diving Rules
You are not allowed to scuba dive on your own in North Cyprus, and it is strictly illegal to either touch or move any historic artifacts seen on your dive. In case of emergency, it is reassuring to know that there is a decompression chamber at the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital in Nicosia.
